I think I have an example of pre-Modern memetic art: when a painter presents his version of a scene of a known story, usually Biblical or of a saint. Michelangelo, Verrocchio, and Donatello all have their own opus of boyhood David standing post-Goliath slaying. Paul Gauguin's "Spirit of the Dead Watching" is a take on Edouard Manet's "Olympia."
